Reports of Aiyedatiwa’s Achievements Sweeten My Ears – Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, on Saturday, showered encomiums on Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, describing him as a loyal, humble, and responsible leader whose achievements in office “sweeten his ears.”
Obasanjo gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the Government House, Akure, ahead of the 75th birthday celebration of eminent lawyer and human rights advocate, Dr Tunji Abayomi, which took place in the state capital.
The former president, who was warmly received by Governor Aiyedatiwa and members of the state executive council, expressed delight at being in Ondo State once again.
Obasanjo said, “Your Excellency, let me thank you most sincerely. I wasn’t expecting that you would be here, because I was told that you were going to Jos. But seeing you here gladdens my heart.”
Speaking further, the elder statesman commended Aiyedatiwa’s humility, loyalty, and sense of duty, describing them as rare virtues. He noted that he had been following developments in the state with admiration.
“Your presence here today is a sign of loyalty,” Obasanjo said. “I had planned to celebrate the birthday in Abeokuta, but Tunji Abayomi said you would take it over. I said, yes, my prayer has been answered. As I grow old, I will have people coming behind me to take over responsibilities that I should no longer be handling. I thank you most sincerely for that.”
Recalling his earlier meeting with Aiyedatiwa during the campaign period, the former president said the prayers offered for the governor’s victory had indeed been answered.
He added, “After your campaign visit, I’ve been hearing from the grapevine about your success and achievements, and it sweetens my ears. What I’ve been hearing about your performance since you assumed office gladdens me greatly.”
Obasanjo also appreciated the warm hospitality extended to him by the governor and his team, promising to visit the state again soon.
In his response, Governor Aiyedatiwa thanked the former president for his visit and his kind words, describing the occasion as a rare privilege and an honour to the government and people of Ondo State.
He said, “This is the second time you are visiting Ondo State since I became governor. The last time was during the commissioning of Ojaja Park, and it remains an unforgettable experience. Your presence today means a lot to us.”
The governor also expressed gratitude to Obasanjo for honouring the celebrant with his presence.
Dignitaries present included the Deputy Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami; Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Seun Osamaye; Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka; Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr Johnson Alabi; Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Engr Leye Akinola; Chairman of SUBEB, Rt.
