The Ondo State Government has announced that the State Contributory Health Scheme is now compulsory for all residents, aiming to reduce healthcare costs across the state. Authorities have urged everyone to enrol, emphasising the scheme’s substantial benefits.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka, represented Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa during the weekend’s presentation of cheques totalling N38 million to 39 residents. He explained that the initiative was designed to assist beneficiaries with their medical expenses.
Ajaka stated, “The contributory health insurance scheme in Ondo State is compulsory for everyone. We began with the public service—state and local government workers—and they are now benefiting from the scheme.
“You do not need money in your pocket to access the service. For operations, for example, patients pay 40 per cent while the government pays 60 per cent. I therefore advise our people to enrol in the scheme.”
He also highlighted the Abiyamo scheme for maternal and child health, which offers free services to registered beneficiaries. “Whether spontaneous vaginal delivery or caesarean section, you pay nothing if you are registered,” he said.
Regarding the cheque presentation, Ajaka noted that the exercise was aimed at supporting vulnerable residents with part of their hospital bills. “We are distributing a total of N38m to 39 residents to assist them. Some require very expensive kidney transplants, and this is what the governor has approved,” he said.
A selection board carefully reviewed applications and supporting documents, approving 39 applicants out of 54 who applied. Ajaka urged beneficiaries to utilise the funds for their intended purpose and prioritise their health. “To the people of Ondo State: take care of your health; it is very important,” he added.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Caroline Jimoh, expressed appreciation for the initiative, calling it timely. “Many of us had given up on treating our health problems because of a lack of funds. This gesture has restored hope to us,” she said.
